The Barlow Springs Back!
on April 9, 2019
We’ve had quite the winter here in Sebastopol! After many months of above-average rainfall, in late February we were hit with what’s known by weather geeks as an atmospheric river, which dumped several inches of rain on our little town in a very short period of time.
Sebastopol and The Barlow are situated right next to the Laguna de Santa Rosa, a beautiful wetland area east of town, and the water level in the laguna was already quite high by the time the storm came through – high enough for kayaking! When the storm came, there was simply nowhere for all of that additional water to go, so the laguna kept rising and rising until it finally flooded The Barlow and many of the shops and restaurants. Some of the shops were submerged under several feet of water and forced to temporarily close their doors.
The purveyors at The Barlow have put years of love and passion into building their businesses, so it was a heartbreaking and shocking experience for them, and for us too. The Meet the Makers Tour takes place exclusively within The Barlow, so we had no choice but to put our tours on hold and wait for our many wonderful tour partners to rebuild and re-open their doors to the public.
Fast forward to early April, and several of the businesses that were closed have already re-opened! Community Market was the first, and we were beyond thrilled that Wm Cofield Cheesemakers, Barrio Cocina, Crooked Goat, and Pax Winery just re-opened last weekend. Construction crews are working tirelessly to get the other businesses up and running as soon as possible. Our tour partners Zazu Kitchen + Farm, Village Bakery, and Friedeman Wines remain closed as of this posting, but we know they’re working hard to re-open as quickly as they can.
We can’t wait to re-launch The Meet the Makers Tour and hope to do so within the next few weeks. We’ll keep you posted, but in the meantime, book a tour, support Sebastopol and The Barlow, and definitely bring your appetite!
